Irfon Forest (19 miles)
Depending on which part of the country you are travelling, you will need a map for directions to get here. It's almost right in at the centre of Wales. However, if you are already in Wales just follow the A483 south from North Wales and head for Llanwrtyd Wells.
When you arrive look for the MTB centre in the town. From the centre, head south west down the main road cross the bridge and turn right.
After 1km, turn left into a lane by some chalets and climb up the side of the wood to a T-junction.
Turn right and descend on a stony track that becomes a lane. Follow this to a junction by a church.
Keep right, cross the bridge and follow the road around to the right.
300m further on, turn sharp left onto a steep lane. Keep left at Kilsby and then fork right twice.
The tarmac ends and the track becomes loose and technical as it leads into the Irfon Forest.
Continue straight ahead on a narrow path. This drops to meet a forest track.
Turn left and climb before a fast descent. At the bottom of the descent, turn left onto a narrow bridleway.
Descend steeply, go straight across a forest track and continue to a gate at the edge of the wood.
The bridleway drops down to the left of the house and then swings right through the yard.
Continue over the bridge and turn right onto the road. Follow the road for 500m to another bridge.
Turn right over the bridge and stay on the main track that climbs steeply around a hairpin bend.
Ignore a right turn at the top and descend past two right turns around a sharp left hairpin.
At the bottom of the descent, before the track starts to climb again, look for a very faint track into the woods on the right.
Follow the track straight through the woods and drop very steeply through the trees to a stream crossing.
Climb steeply out of the dip to the right and follow the bridleway which widens and joins a good forest track that runs alongside the river.
Turn left at a T-junction and climb from the river to a T-junction of forest tracks. Turn left and climb around a number of hairpins.
As the track starts to descend, turn left around a hairpin and then, 300m further on, turn right.
Follow the track out of the forest and continue around the hillside. Ignore one bridleway on the right and then , at a gate above a wood, turn right and descend steeply to a stream.
Climb out of the valley on a steep track that turns sharp right. Cross a track and go straight ahead through a steel gate.
After 800m, turn left through a wooden gate, drop down to a stream and climb back up past a house on the right.
Continue to a bridge and turn left onto a good track, Descend through a farm to the road at Bwlchmawr.
Turn right and continue to another farm. Carry straight on, the bridleway that stops into woodland at Gilfach.
Continue through the forest and descend to the A483. Turn right at the Woollen Mill and follow the main road back into Llanwrtyd.
